ADAM participated in the "Laser and Photogrammetric Methods for Rock Face Characterization" workshop at the Golden Rocks 2006 conference in Golden, Colorado, on the 17th and 18th of June, 2006.
We explored the use of 3DM Analyst for face mapping and covered the following topics:
The principals of photogrammetry, and how those principles are used during planning to determine the expected accuracy at different ranges with different camera and lens combinations.
The different image capturing techniques that can be used with the software and the trade-offs associated with each.
The importance of camera calibration and its effect on the results, why each camera and lens combination needs to be calibrated individually, and the facilities in the software for performing and evaluating a calibration.
Problems that are encountered in practice using digital photogrammetry and how to address them.
Techniques for evaluating the quality of generated data.
Exporting data into other systems.
As part of the two-day workshop participants were taken on a field trip to capture images of the rock face, which we then used to create an accurate 3D model by processing them in 3DM Analyst Mine Mapping Suite! Two different image capturing techniques were shown — strips and fans — which each required just two minutes of field time to capture. Loading the images into the software, digitising control points, automatically generating relative-only points, and generating DTMs of the entire rock face took just 15 minutes — or the same period of time one of the participants took to perform just one laser scan of about 1/5th of the rock face!
